The governor declared a state of emergency for North Carolina on Thursday.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — North Carolina is bracing for significant winter storm impacts as snow, ice, and freezing rain sweep across the state.

Governor Josh Stein declared a state of emergency on Thursday ahead of the storm.

“The winter storm will likely hit much of our state. At this time, our greatest concern is road safety. Precipitation and freezing temperatures tomorrow afternoon and tonight will make a mess of the roads on Saturday morning. The thawing and refreezing of precipitation leads to ice, so that everyone needs to be careful on our roads. Please avoid traveling unless it is absolutely necessary, ” Stein said.

Emergency responders and the North Carolina National Guard have been mobilized to address challenges posed by the storm.

Agencies, including the Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the Department of Public Safety, are collaborating on snow and debris removal, road safety, and infrastructure restoration.

Stein and other state officials are urging residents across the state to take the following steps to stay safe ahead of the winter storm:

  • Stay informed through local weather updates.
  • Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
  • Prepare emergency kits with food, water, flashlights, and first aid supplies.
  • Operate generators outdoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Call 911 only for emergencies.
