What is the most common month for snow in central North Carolina?

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Some people in Franklin County saw some light snow accumulation on Monday night.

Pictures were sent in from Louisburg and Ingleside, showing a solid dusting, to upwards of half an inch of snow.

January is becoming the most common month to see snow in central North Carolina, so this doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Since 1887, January and February are tied with an average of 2.4″ of snow each month.

However, the trend over the past few decades is that snow is becoming less common overall, but if we see snow, it’s more likely to fall in January.

One of the reasons why January is becoming the most common month to see snow is because on average, it is the coldest. Winter is the fastest warming season by far in central North Carolina. Most of our missed snow opportunities in the winter don’t come from a lack of precipitation, it’s usually because we don’t get the cold air here in time.

Friday night into Saturday is one of the best chances for snow in the Triangle that we’ve had in years. It’s been over 1,000 days since the last accumulating snow event at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and if we don’t get it this weekend, we may very well be on our way to breaking the record for the longest snowless streak.
