The two-year veteran of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was arrested after a reported domestic incident.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because of the nature of the alleged crime.
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer has been arrested and charged with assault, the law enforcement department announced on Tuesday.
CMPD Officer Onesiphorus Bernard Williams was taken into custody after allegedly pointing a gun at two people around 5:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve morning, according to officials. Williams was off duty when the domestic incident occurred at a home in northeast Charlotte.
“I am deeply troubled by the arrest of Officer Williams,” CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said in a released statement. “Our department holds itself and its officers to the highest standards of conduct, both on and off duty. This incident is a serious violation of those standards and a betrayal of the public trust we strive to earn every day. We will not tolerate any behavior that undermines the integrity of the CMPD or erodes the confidence of the community we serve. This officer’s actions do not reflect the values of the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our city.”
Williams was hired in Oct. 2022 and is currently assigned to the South Division.
Williams is expected to be arraigned in court after the Christmas holiday.
Earlier this year, a former CMPD police officer accepted a plea after being accused of stealing money from a suspect. Another, a lieutenant with the department, was also charged with financial crimes.
