GREENSBORO, N.C. —

UPDATE:

Greensboro have identified the victim that died in a shooting on I-40 West early Monday morning.

Officers said 41-year-old Cesar Ignacio Sanchez was found dead in the driver’s seat of a black Ram pickup truck. He had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.

Greensboro police continue to investigate this as a homicide.

Previous Report:

The Greensboro Police Department issued a warning to drivers Monday morning to avoid a section of I-40 West.

Around 3:30 a.m. on Monday, police responded to I-40 West at Highway 68 regarding a report of a person injured in a vehicle on the shoulder of the road.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the only person in the vehicle dead from a gunshot wound.

Two women who got caught in the traffic explained what they saw.

“There was like a crime scene van but then also it was like the size of an RV, like a big RV type car and it said like Greensboro Police investigations or something like that. And I was like, ‘Oh, that looks serious.’ And then I see it was like a Dodge pickup and it looked like maybe it was like a company truck or something like that. And it had like a big tarp over the driver’s side,” said Julia Terry

“A lot of people go to work that early in the morning and it’s just scary to think that it could have just been somebody random that made somebody mad because they crossed over their lane or didn’t see somebody and just they could just do damage like that. It is scary how that happens,” said Jennifer Welch.

Police said the individual has not been identified.

All westbound lanes of I-40 West were rerouted to the Regional Road exit due to a “police investigation.”

The closure was between Exit 210 (NC 68) and Exit 208 (Sandy Ridge Road), according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

All lanes are now open, according to the Greensboro Police Department.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and it is the 41st homicide of the year.
