Arrested made in connection deadly shooting of armored truck worker in Kings Mountain

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Multiple people have been arrested in connection with the October shooting of an armored truck employee who was servicing an ATM in Kings Mountain, the police department is expected to announce later Wednesday morning.

Kings Mountain Police Chief Gerald Childress is expected to announce details during an 11:30 a.m. news conference.

Richard Walter Henderson IV, 29, of Charlotte, was driving a Loomis Fargo armored truck when he stopped to work on an ATM outside a pharmacy on East King Street. Henderson died after being shot multiple times, according to police. 

Childress previously confirmed the victim was armed and his weapon was recovered at the scene. In October, police could not initially confirm if any money was taken but said they were investigating the shooting as both an armed robbery and a homicide. 

“We will locate you, we will find you,” Childress pledged in October. “It may take some time, but we will find you and bring you to justice.”

Shortly after the shooting, the police department shared surveillance photos of the suspect’s car. The photos show it to be a newer-model black Jeep Compass Freedom Edition with a distinctive star decal on the hood. The car also appeared to have temporary paper tags.

In the last six months, law enforcement across the greater Charlotte-area has investigated numerous incidents involving the robbery of armored trucks.

In August, the driver of a truck was shot during an armed robbery in Statesville, according to authorities.

In July, another driver was kidnapped when two robbers stole $275,000 from a truck in Charlotte, according to a police report.

In June, two people tried to rob an armored truck in Rowan County, law enforcement said at the time.
