The Invictus Task Force held a presser Wednesday to share details in the latest operation which resulted in the arrest of 23 men.
In late October, the Invictus Task Force executed a five-day undercover operation, “Operation Millstone,” aimed at apprehending individuals attempting to engage in sexual activity with minors.
The operation, organized by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office and Detective Seth Williams, saw suspects traveling to Davidson and Forsyth counties under the belief they were meeting children for illegal sexual contact.
Instead, they were intercepted by law enforcement.
Davidson County Sheriff Richie Simmons emphasized the severity of the issue, while Randolph County Sheriff Gregory Seabolt warned that these individuals often appear trustworthy.
“These are people you might see at the grocery store,” Seabolt said. “It’s critical we keep them away from our children and grandchildren,” Simmons said.
The large-scale effort involved collaboration with multiple agencies, including the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), Homeland Security, and law enforcement personnel from 19 agencies across North Carolina. Support teams like forensic examiners, SWAT units, and criminal analysts also contributed to the operation, with drones utilized to monitor suspects’ residences.
Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson underscored the importance of protecting children. “It’s a constant battle for law enforcement, but safeguarding our youth is a responsibility we must prioritize,” he stated.
The undercover operation exposed suspects from a variety of professions, including teachers, highlighting the pervasive nature of the issue. Authorities emphasized the need for vigilance and community awareness to prevent predators from harming children.
The ages of the arrested individuals ranged from 25 to over 60, showcasing the broad demographic involved in such crimes. Investigations remain ongoing.
This operation drew resources from 19 other agencies, including sheriff’s offices in Davie, Iredell, Guilford, New Hanover, Scotland, Rockingham, and Rowan counties, and police departments in Archdale, Thomasville, Lexington, Liberty, Huntersville, Sanford, Durham, Fayetteville, and Mint Hill. Federal partners included the U.S. Army Criminal Investigations Division and the United States Secret Service.
