Strong-to-severe thunderstorms across greater Charlotte area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Scattered thunderstorms Tuesday will impact the evening commute with heavy rain, lightning and the risk of flash flooding. 

While not everyone will see rain, those who experience one of the scattered thunderstorms will be impacted by periods of heavy rain. These periods of heavy rain will reduce visibility and potentially create the risk of flash flooding. The risk of flooding is the highest in low-lying areas such as near creeks, streams and drains.

Throughout the rest of the week, the forecast calls for additional scattered storms to bring total rainfall accumulations between two and four inches. 

Within an hour of the first thunderstorm in Charlotte on Tuesday, over 8,000 Duke Energy customers in Charlotte were without power, according to the power company. Additional power outages were possible as scattered storms continued.
