$25K reward still on the table for information about 2020 homicide in Gastonia

Gavin Plyler was killed in a drive-by shooting on East Park Avenue.

GASTONIA, N.C. — It’s been more than four years since 24-year-old Gavin Plyler was killed in an apparent drive-by shooting in Gastonia. Now, police are reminding the public about an available reward in the hopes of solving the case.

On Tuesday, the Gastonia Police Department shared a video recapping the case. The shooting happened on May 5, 2020, along East Park Avenue near North Chestnut Street. Police say Plyler was sitting inside his home when gunfire rang out from a passing car. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but died of his injuries.

Gastonia Police note in the video that 19 shots were fired from an AR-15 rifle from inside the car.

The department’s video included surveillance video, which showed when the shooting happened. Police said the shooting was likely a case of mistaken identity.

The North Carolina governor’s office first offered the $25,000 reward in June 2023, and the department shared its reminder on social media about the reward. Anyone with information can call Sgt. M. Watts directly at (980) 522-0130.
