PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. on Thursday due to wind chills between 5 and 10 degrees. Temperatures are starting in the lower-20s and will stay very cold all day.

We expect to stay at or below freezing for most of the day, only reaching 34° for a few hours this afternoon. Skies will stay sunny today and mostly clear tonight with lows in the upper teens.

A Severe Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday at 1 p.m. until Saturday at 10 a.m. throughout the Piedmont Triad and most of central North Carolina.

Clouds will quickly overtake our skies tomorrow morning with snow moving in by afternoon.  Highs will be near 34° and likely will drop as the snow begins. Snow is expected to continue into the night, eventually changing over to a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain as it ends early Saturday morning.

Total accumulation in the Triad is expected to be between 2 inches and 3 inches; in the mountains and foothills, 3 inches to 4 inches; in the southern Piedmont, and 1 inch to 2 inches with more ice accrual in Montgomery and Chatham counties.

Skies will become partly cloudy Saturday with highs in the mid-30s. We will face challenges for nighttime and morning driving on Sunday, Monday and perhaps Tuesday mornings due to black ice as moisture refreezes each night.  Sunday will be sunny with highs in the upper-30s.

The new work week is going to be very pretty, with sunny skies through the middle of the week. Temperatures will gradually warm to the mid-40s on Monday and Tuesday before dropping back to the mid-30s on Wednesday afternoon.
