The girl said she pushed herself away before running home to tell her mother.
MEBANE, N.C. — A terrifying encounter in Mebane has left a community shaken after a young girl narrowly escaped an attempted kidnapping.
The incident happened on Dec. 31 around 10:05 a.m. in the area of 100 Crawley Ct. According to police, a 13-year-old was riding her scooter when a person dressed in black with their face covered approached and grabbed her.
The girl managed to escape by kicking the suspect. Her younger brother and a friend turned back to help, which may have startled the suspect and caused them to flee on foot, the children said.Â
The three were able to run home to safety.Â
The girl’s mother who immediately called 911 described the harrowing moment her daughter returned home in tears. “She grabbed me and said she was almost kidnapped. I called the police right away,” the mother said, adding that the suspect’s actions have shaken the entire family.
Officers quickly responded, searched the area, spoke with residents, and reviewed surveillance footage. Police say there is no evidence of an ongoing threat to the community.
Their mother, still shaken, expressed gratitude that her daughter escaped unharmed and urged parents to remain vigilant. “It can happen so fast. Teach your kids to fight back and stay together,” she said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Mebane Police Department at (919) 563-9031.
