CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person died when a tree fell on a home in northwest Charlotte early Friday morning, Medic confirmed.
The incident happened around 5 a.m. at a home on Brookway Drive, which is just off Brookshire Boulevard and Rozzelles Ferry Road. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Charlotte Fire and Medic.
Medic confirmed one person was pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Firefighters confirmed children in the home were not hurt by the tree.
This is the first storm-related death in the Charlotte area since Helene moved into the region late Thursday.
Deputies in York County were dispatched to a tree that fell on a home on Poinsett Drive in Rock Hill, the sheriff’s office said. Two people were trapped inside the home, officials said.
The Charlotte area is expected to see heavy rain and gusty winds throughout the day Friday. The risk of downed trees will be even greater due to prolonged periods of rain saturating the ground.
A Tornado Watch is in place through 8 a.m. for portions of the Charlotte area. This includes Chesterfield, Lancaster, Chester, Anson, Cabarrus, Gaston, Union (NC), Richmond and Mecklenburg counties.
A flash flood warning is in effect for Cabarrus, Mecklenburg and Union counties until 10 a.m. due to heavy rain.
