1 child in critical condition, 2 rescued after playing on frozen pond, officials say

Dozens of first responders were called to the scene.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — One child is in critical condition and two were rescued after falling into a frozen pond while playing, officials with the Winston-Salem Fire Department (WSFD) and Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) confirmed.

First responders arrived on the scene at the 4000 block of Duck Pond Court at 5:02 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Officials said there were three kids in the water.

Two of the children were rescued and taken to a local hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time, police said.

The third child was found and given life-saving measures before being taken to a hospital. The third child is in critical condition, officials said.

Winston-Salem police, fire and the High Point Fire Department responded. Twenty-four firefighters, the High Point Fire Dive Team, and drones were on the scene.
